Cloud computing is transforming the way we live and work. Learn the practical skills you need to become a specialist at the forefront of an evolving technology area, as you design, build and manage cloud-based infrastructures and develop solutions to real-life problems.

As more large and complex applications and datasets are being stored and analysed remotely across the internet we can see cloud computing changing the IT landscape.

Because cloud computing is a relatively new computing paradigm, the in-depth knowledge of the technologies, components and processes involved in the design of a cloud-based infrastructure that you’ll gain will put you at the forefront of the industry.

You’ll constantly compare your study to real life examples as you work to understand consequences for both the end-users and IT services, in terms of software and hardware provisioning, network resilience and data security, as well as business applications of cloud computing and big data.

As developers it’s crucial we act ethically, so you’ll consider legal and security aspects of data protection and information security while ensuring you’re critically aware of current problems and developing new insights on the subject.

With all these aspects which you'll learn through experienced lecturers, ARU offers you a chance to access employment through this bachelor!

About this course

Cloud Computing is a relatively new computing paradigm, meaning your knowledge and skills will put you at the forefront of the industry. There are two types of emerging cloud computing careers: IT pros with specific cloud skills and IT admins with cloud architecture know-how.

There’s a real need for personnel who can advise managers on the suitability of each type of cloud service and their potential pitfalls, as well as those who are able to design and implement such systems whether privately or publically managed.

There’s plenty of opportunity for practical work, as you use our specialist labs to understand and build cloud computing applications and infrastructures, as well as analysing and developing solutions to practical applications of big data sets within a business environment.

Throughout our course you’ll consider your career options and progression, as you learn to employ visualisation techniques to present large and complex data sets to relevant stakeholders. You’ll gain confidence in communicating complex information to others and build your network of contacts through our series of guest speaker seminars.

Course programme

Computer Networks

Working with industry based standards and devices you’ll learn the fundamental networking concepts required by skilled IT professionals. You’ll identify the communication model and the protocols associated in each layer while focusing on Local Area Networks and the role of routers and switches.

Operating Systems and Virtualisation

Rather than working with a specific operating system, such as Windows and/or Linux, you’ll work with the generalities of modern operating systems through theory and practice. This means you’ll identify the role of the operating system when dealing with a security breach within the organisation, regardless of the type of environment where the operating system has been deployed.

Secure Systems

Traditionally, information security has been poorly understood and rarely integrated into system design. With the growth of high bandwidth internet, eCommerce, eBusiness and Virtual Private Networks, security has become a centre-stage issue. However, organisations and businesses find themselves missing the necessary skills and knowledge, especially of the wider security picture, that is needed to develop effective security strategies.

Research Methods

Gain the support and foundations in the research skills for your Master’s level dissertation. You’ll investigate generic research activities, including project management and dissertation preparation. Your topics could include the consideration of suitable content, planning, and the use of project management software.

Cloud Infrastructure and Services

Gain the knowledge to make informed decisions on technologies, processes, and mechanisms required to build a cloud infrastructure. Cover the design principles involved in building a cloud infrastructure based on the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) definition of cloud computing. You’ll focus on the cloud reference model, which consists of five fundamental layers (physical, virtual, control, orchestration, and service) and three crosslayer functions (business continuity, security, and service management).

Data Science and Big Data Analysis

Here, you’ll gain knowledge and practical experience to participate effectively in big data and other analytics projects. You’ll address the business challenges that leverage big data and gain in-depth knowledge of big data and the practice of data analytics, as well as an introduction to the lifecycle of data analytics.

Major Project

This module supports students in the preparation and submission of a Master's stage project, dissertation or artefact. The Module provides the opportunity for students to select and explore in-depth, a topic that is of interest and relevant to their course in which they can develop a significant level of expertise.

Assessment

We’ll asses your knowledge and understanding through a case study in which you’ll design, implement and test the security strategy of an organisation. You’ll also complete in-class tests, written assignments, software projects and presentations.
