Course programme

Now you can learn photography both online and on location with the combination course. This combines the Beginner’s Project Tuition Course with a One2One Workshop, so that you can learn at your own pace over 12 months. and then book a day within the course year to practice your new found skills on location. It’s the ultimate learning course and the perfect way to learn landscape photography.

12 months online tuition

Unlike other home study courses, this course is tailored towards travel and landscape photography only, arguably the most popular subject for photography. I have specialised in this field for 20 years and for the past few years have been teaching others the skills required to excel in this subject. My work is widely published in magazines, books, newspapers and calendars and I write extensively on the subject for most of the UK photography titles.

As well as taking pictures, I also write about the subject. My work has been published regularly in most of the UK’s leading photography magazines on all manner of photographic subjects and my writing has expanded to travel writing for leading magazines.

Using my experience, I have put together a course, which differs from other online tuition courses. The first five course modules will consist of lessons to teach you the basics of digital photography. These will cover the key areas every budding photographer needs to learn in order to have confidence with their camera and the necessary skills to take on any project.

The five beginning modules cover:

Exposure
Composition
Depth of field
Light
Filters

Once these five basic modules have been completed, you can then tailor the rest of the course with five further modules that suit the area of photography that most interests you. Why do a lesson on portraiture if you hate taking portraits? Why complete a lesson in sports photography if you want a course that concentrates on landscape. For these reasons I have put together a course that is different to other courses on the market, featuring lessons that I have expertise in and have a genuine enthusiasm for and therefore can pass on my knowledge to you the photographer. So, for the second half of the course, you can pick and choose five further modules from the list below that suit you:

Advanced Landscapes
Colour
Architecture
Abstracts
Long exposures
Night
Panoramics
Water
Shoot to sell
Black and White

All of these ten modules are linked to travel and landscape photography. However, if panoramics and black and white don’t interest you, that’s OK. Not interested in night photography? No problem. You can pick the most relevant five to suit you and complete the course learning about these. This makes the course tailored to your photography. No other photography course offers this kind of flexibility and so you only pay for subjects that interest you.

I am presenting this as an online photography course and therefore all correspondence and tuition will be via e-mail. Each of the ten modules will come in the form of a pdf file, presented very much like the kind of feature you would see in a photography magazine, explaining in depth each technique and illustrated with my own images, which echo the text, giving visual examples of the key points. At the end of the article, will be details of an assignment based on the lesson for you to complete.

This will consist of a brief of what you understood from the lesson and then a task for you to complete based on this, which involves shooting your own examples and sending them to me for critique. I will provide positive feedback on your images and where you might be able to improve your skills.

Inclusive One2One Workshop

As part of the course, you are also offered a one to one workshop day with me, either in a countryside, coastal or urban landscape environment. Here you can practice all the techniques learnt on the course. The day will be set up on a day to suit you, anytime throughout the course. The three locations you can choose from are:

Countryside - Peak District
The Peak District was Britain’s first National Park and has a wonderful rocky landscape of gritstone moors and limestone dales. Focusing on some of the famous locations in the Dark Peaks in the north such as Curbar Edge, Stanage Edge and Higger Tor.

Coastal - Yorkshire Coast
The Yorkshire Coast has some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK and therefore has some of the most wonderful locations for photography. Locations can include Staithes, Runswick Bay and Whitby.

Urban Landscape - Salford Quays
This rejuvenated area of Manchester is a fantastic place for photography. Home to the Lowry Centre and Imperial War Museum North, it has a stunning mix of architecture surrounding the canals and basins, offering a variety of composition opportunities.

The workshop day will fit around your schedule and the day will usually last around 6 hours on location, depending on the time of year.
