Course programme

Comprehensive Functional and Aesthetic Implant Prosthetics

(152 CPD hours)

This one-year comprehensive programme aims to train both experienced practitioners and new comers to the scientific and clinical art of prosthetic and occlusal rehabilitation of implanted patients.

The emphasis is placed on numerous hands-on and supervised clinical sessions allowing the students to equip their own patients, implanted by themselves or their colleagues, with functional and aesthetic prostheses.

The active participation of a well-established prosthetic laboratory with recognized training experience brings a clinically driven approach to dental prosthetics and in particular, more "sophisticated" contemporary implant prosthetics.

The programme extends over seven modules where didactic courses harmoniously alternate with clinical and hands-on sessions.

Course Programme

Module One

Principles of prostheses over natural abutments and implants supported prostheses

Principles of occlusion. Clinical case presentations

Hands on training in dental laboratory

• Preparation of study models and occlusal analysis

• Bite registration and determination of intermaxillary relationship

• Laboratory prescription

Module Two

Photography: Principles and hands-on. Clinical case presentations - Photoshop (part1)
Successful prosthetic treament planning. Prosthetic options (part 1) : Fixed prostheses

Hands on training in dental laboratory

• Preparation of working models and trimming of dies

• Diagnostic and aesthetic wax-ups

• Overview of prosthetic components

Module Three

Soft tissue management. Second stage surgery. Hands-on
• Soft tissue management: Soft tissues of oral cavity, peri-implant tissues, special characteristics of soft tissues

• Second stage surgery: Incision patterns, tissue manipulation techniques and grafts, suturing techniques, stabilisation and
dressings, impact of second stage surgery on implant prosthetics

• Hands on: Soft tissue manipulation and grafts - free flap grafts, connective tissue grafts, tissue enhancement

Clinical session. Demonstration and supervised patient care

• Second stage surgery and soft tissue managment. Soft tissue evaluation: keratinised tissue, dento-gingival junction,
interdental papillae, mucogingival junctionSunday 10 January 2010 -

Prosthetic options. Clinical case presentations - PowerPoint and Photoshop (part 2)
• Prosthetic options: Removable prostheses (part 1). Fixed prostheses (part 2). Immediate loading. One-piece implants

Module Four

Impression taking. Abutments and components

Impression taking: Choice of material and impression trays. Impression taking - immobilisation and consolidation
• Abutments and components: Selection of abutments, preparation of abutments, angulation, computer assisted abutments

Clinical session. Demonstration and supervised patient care

• Impression taking • Selection of abutments

Hands on training in dental laboratory

• Provisional and progressive prostheses • Adaptation of provisional prostheses • Bead on acrylic technique

Module Five

Bite registration and determination of intermaxillary relationship. Aesthetic considerations

• Bite registration: Basic principles - chairside techniques and prepared techniques. Most common errors
• Aesthetic considerations: Form, shades and shapes. Lip support and smile lines. Papiilla enhancement. Golden proportions

Clincial session. Demonstration and supervised patient care

• Bite registration

• Determination of form and shade

Facial harmony and cephalometric analysis. Clinical case presentations (part 3)

Module Six

Progressive soft tissue enhancement. Management of manufacturing complications

• Soft tissue: Evaluation, biologic width and clinical significance. Mechanical methods of soft tissue support around implants• Manufacturing complications: Ill-fitting metal structures, distortion of multiple porcelain units, soldered units

Clinical session. Demonstration and supervised patient care

• Try in prosthesis: Evaluation of passive fit, aesthetic modifications, occlusal modifications

Implant prosthetic complications and management. Clinical case presentations (part 4)

Module Seven

Definitive prostheses. Cementation. Prosthetic follow up. Oral hygiene and maintenance

• Definitive prostheses: Use of jigs, applying torque to abutments.

• Choice of cement and cementation techniques.
• Hygiene and maintenance: Instrumentation, prescription to dental hygienist, home care advice and armamentarium
