Technical Design work covers a wide range of jobs at different levels within various industries. Technical design generally involves using software to create design plans for buildings and machinery, for example in the engineering, construction, architecture and manufacturing sectors.

Jobs could involve working in 2D design, known as surface modelling, and 3D design, called solid modelling. In solid
modelling, a 3D display of a structure/component is created.
Engineers can then use this, for example, to take a ‘virtual tour' around the inside of a new building to plan, or to 'look inside' a piece of manufacturing machinery. The following are examples of some the duties that may be included in

  • Preparing and producing drawings, new drawing and editing, modifying existing drawing, using all the drawing commands of Autocad
  • Creating plans
  • Developing specifications for construction work
  • Following systems requirements and configuration
  • Working closely with other professionals such as production managers, marketing staff anddesign engineers
  • Preparing more detailed final designs - in larger companies these may be worked up in detail by specialist staff
  • Working to a brief

Jobs may include:

  • Junior CAD Technician or Designer
  • Design Draftsman
  • Engineer Draftsman
  • Floor Planner
  • Furniture, Kitchen or Garden Designer
  • Architectural Technician

In general the training involves:
The CAD training programme covers a range of units including:

  • Drawing
  • Dimensioning
  • Layouts
  • Multi-Layering
  • 3D Modelling and
  • 3D Surfacing to name but a few.

The main training is computer based.

Flexible training:
Units can either be grouped together to make formal
qualifications, or selected individually to accompany other CAD training programme.

Duration

The length of training depends on the individual trainee’s needs, circumstances and job goals. These will be discussed and agreed with the Case Manager at assessment stage.

Level of training and qualifications offered:

  • 4353-01 Level 2 Certificate in 2D CAD (Examining Body for this is City and Guilds)
  • Foundation Diploma in Solid Works – In-house Certificate

Our Person Centred approach:
Once funding has been agreed, you will be invited in for an assessment with a dedicated Case Manager who will discuss with you your skills, aspirations and abilities and from this confirm whether you are ready to start training for
work with St Loye's. The Case Manager will then build an Individual Employment Plan (IEP) in agreement with you. This will include personally tailored skills training, development, support and employment programme.
