About this course

You should be aged 19 or over and have: a good understanding of computer hardware and computer operating systems. a basic level of English. If you need help with your English or Maths, Preston College can provide you with support at a time to suit you, which will bring you up to the required standard.

Computer Networking - OCNW Level 2

Introduction:
This Intermediate Level course provides an introduction to networking PCs, peer to peer using Windows 95/98/XP and client server using Novell and Windows NT. You will also be given an opportunity to install network cards and make up network cables. Successful completion of this course leads to an OCNW (Open College of the North West) Level 2 `A Unit` Certificate in Networking.

Study Mode & Location:
This 16 week part-time evening course will last for three hours per week. Due to the practical nature of the course any additional time spent practicing away from College will help you achieve a better understanding, but there is no formal requirement to work at home. The course will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

During this practical course you look at:

Assessment:
You will be assessed via an assignment (set by the course tutor) and a collection of job record sheets.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Successful completion of this course allows progression to a Computer Maintenance Level 2 course. From there, you may progress to:

  • Cisco CCNA Level 3; or
  • HNC/HND or Foundation Degree.

    You will need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser.
    Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
