This is a practical hands on course taught in Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The course is taught on site in the study centre and you can use the facilities in the gardens to gain practical experience. There will be visits to a variety of wildlife sites and you could expect to be working at some sites managed by The Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country and other groups. At the Birmingham Botanical Gardens is a large wildlife area (SLINC) with woodland, a large pond and a stream where some of the practical work will be carried out. You will study topics like environmental and land based businesses, conservation and the improvement of British habitats and the ecology of trees, woods and forests. You will also be introduced to urban habitat ecology and freshwater and wetland conservation. In order to gain the skills employers are looking for you will also take part in a work placement.

About this course

You will need 4 GCSEs grade D or above including English and maths. Alternatively you may have a level 1 Diploma in a suitable subject.

Course programme

After the course you can progress to a level 3 diploma which is also offered at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens or you can seek employment within the countryside and environment industry. Examples of potential employers would be Environment Agency, National Trust, British Waterways, Wildlife Trust, Severn Trent.

Additional information

Assessment for the Diploma is achieved by observation of practical tasks and a range of continuous assessment including some of the following; presentations and written assignments, surveys, leaflets, reports, posters and a management plan.
