The Higher National Certificate: Construction and the Built Environment course is a two year part time-course on day release. It is accredited and validated by Pearson UK and is a popular course for construction studies leading into BSc Degree programs or professional Institute courses. The curriculum area has a long standing reputation for the delivery of high quality education. We have the experience of working with a broad range of students from all areas of industry. The curriculum area is an expanding area within the college and provides progression routes for all students from A Levels, BTEC Level 3 Diploma/Extended Diploma, City & Guilds Level 3 craft courses onto Higher Education courses.
Course modules will be studied over a two year programme including both mandatory and optional units. Topics include Design Principles and Application for Construction and the Built Environment; Science and Materials for Construction and the Built Environment; Group Project in the Construction Industry; Health, Safety and Welfare for Construction and the Built Environment.

Entry Requirements

All applicants must be in employment or unpaid internships in the industry in a suitable role relevant to the qualification. ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS UCAS Tariff Points: Not required as only the part time programme is available BTEC in Construction and the Built Environment BTEC Extended Diploma: Grade PPP BTEC Diploma: Grade MP BTEC 90 Credit Diploma: Grade MM Construction Trade Craft Level 3 NVQ & Level 3 Technical Certificate A Levels (GCE and VCE): 2 A Levels at Grade D Access to HE: Grade P45 Minimum number of GCSEs at Grade C or above: 5 which must include: GCSE English: Grade C or 4 GCSE Maths: Grade C or 4 GCSE Science: Grade C or 4. Are Level 2 equivalents accepted?: Yes We encourage applications from students who do not meet the entry requirements outlined but can demonstrate ability through work experience, portfolio of evidence or successful interview.

Delivery and Assessment

The course is delivered by appropriately experienced and qualified lecturers. The course material reflects the students work environment together with simulated workplace tasks. Students will be working both individually and in groups. The key characteristics of assessment will be validity, reliability and fitness for purpose. A variety of traditional and innovative assessment methods, including case studies, assignments, time constrained assessments and work based projects will be used.

Progression

This is a higher technician course and is also designed for those in the industry who wish to up-skill to a Degree in one of the following: • Quantity Surveying • Building Surveying • Architecture/Architectural Technology • Construction Management and Economics • Professional Institute studies • Building Services Engineering We have progression links with the University of Wolverhampton.
