This course is for you if you are presently working in a construction-related area, i.e. tradesman or trainee surveyor, manager, architect etc. and who wish to gain a formal qualification in the construction industry. The course is taught over 2 years and you attend one full day per week.

This level 3 course is a equal to 2 "A" levels at the end of the programme, you can progress onto the Havering College HNC in Construction programme (2 years, 10 units) or go on to a university education either full- or part-time. The HNC programme at Havering College is a level 4 course and leads to university. It is recognised in the industry as a professional qualification and you can progress on to a degree.




You MUST be employed (self-employed if proof of regular work can be produced). If you are a school-leaver (aged 16 to 19), you must be employed and have a minumum of 5 GCSE "C" grades including Maths and English. Mature students must be employed and have a good standard of education.

Course programme

The BTEC National Certificate in Construction has 12 units (6 per year). This is a generic course to teach you many aspects of construction from design technology, building surveying, construction management, maths, health and safety, planning and organisation, valuation etc.

Course Assessment Method

All 12 assignments are marked on a task basis and you will be expected to produce this work using a word processor. Potential grades are: Pass, Merit and Distinction. An external verifier visits the college and your work is randomly examined for accuracy of marking and quality of work. Some assignments do have a class test / exam within their framework.

We have 6 compulsory units:

1 Health, Safety and Welfare; 2 Sustainable Construction; 3 Mathematics in Construction and the Built Environment; 4 Science and Materials in Construction; 5 Construction Technology and Design in Construction; 6 Building Technology in Construction.
