About this course

-Identify key trends and concerns of the plays and the experimental nature of new forms
-Understand structure, methods of characterisations, use of language and how they work as performance texts.

You will be given photocopied extracts of the plays.

You will need to do a certain amount of reading and preparation.
Small and large group discussion. Discussion of extracts; viewing where possible.

Course programme

Themes and styles of 21st century British and Irish plays. We look at the structure, language and characterisation of the plays and how they can be interpreted as performance texts, exploring ideas of gender, race, power and the influence of contemporary sexuality.

We will look at extracts of a number of plays, including Jezz Butterworth's The Ferryman, Martin McDonagh's The lieutenant of Innishmore, Nina Raine's Consent and Charles 111 by Mike Bartlett.
