The course will seek to look at the position of “mixed media” within the context of both Assemblage and Collage. We will examine contemporary drawing and painting both on and off the canvas and seek to uncover its Modernist formed relationship with reclamation and recycling.

Collage derives from the French word, “Coller”, meaning to glue and “Assemblage” is a term given to making three or two dimensional constructions putting together found natural or manufactured objects.

We will look at how to reassemble the flat packed painting of old and embrace an abundance of mixed media materials, interventions, juxtapositions and techniques.

The course will be primarily practical but will align itself to looking at these cross-overs from early Cubism, through to artists such as Lygia Clark, Robert Rauschenberg, John Chamberlain and on to contemporary artists such as Angela De La Cruz and Oscar Tuazon.

The course will also seek to address how collage and assemblage can be used to inform the more traditional practices of canvas painting, looking at realist painters such as Neil Gall, Dexter Dalwood or the Pop artist Richard Hamilton.
