This conversation class gives you the chance to improve your English speaking and listening skills by discussing a variety of everyday and current affairs topics. You will also listen to others and respond to their ideas. In particular you will focus on informal language and how word order, pronunciation and different types of phrases can affect the meaning of what you say as well as whether you sound rude, polite, angry or uninterested.

About this course

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in. Handouts are provided by the tutor.

Classes are discussion based. Students work in pairs and small groups with teacher input and feedback. This will be a dynamic, exciting and creative course with lots of interaction and participation. There will be a lot of practice and your tutor will guide you so you can become aware of your own strengths and areas you need to improve. You will need to do some work outside the classroom to get the most from this course. Homework will relate to the discussion and language points that come up in class.

Course programme

We will select topics based on the interests of the group and what is happening in London, the UK and worldwide. You will increase your vocabulary and practise forming questions to actively listen and participate in English conversations. Some of the language covered includes: expressions used before challenging another opinion, how to contradict another person, how to make suggestions, how to imply an opinion, how to ask for an opinion, how to give a view, how to justify a position, express a belief, and express a view tentatively.

Additional information

There are a variety of courses you can do at the same time or after this one. You could do Level 1 or 2 General ESOL course. Cambridge English: Advanced might be suitable. Or a course without an exam. ESOL Matters of Opinion (L2) would be a very good follow on course. As would ESOL and Making Podcasts (digital recordings), ESOL and Reading Stories, ESOL reading: book club (level 2), ESOL and Film. We also have: ESOL Pronunciation Stage 1, Read Well, Write Well, Grammar in Practice (Upper-Intermediate or Advanced) English for Business, Communicating at Work, Writing Skills in Practice.
