Core Values in Periodontics

Aim: To update the dental team on periodontal issues relating to assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Enabling practitioners to appreciate the importance of nutrition in oral health and the interrelationship between oral and general health.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Give an account of how genetic and nutritional factors influence periodontal inflammation, disease prevalence. To discuss to concept of 'neutrogenomics' and how our genetic makeup impacts upon outcomes of nutritional interventions.

• Describe the potential risks that poor oral health may have in development of systemic illnesses and the possible mechanisms whereby poor oral health may put patients at risk. Give an account of what to tell 'at risk patients'.

• Clarify the importance of correct periodontal assessment and risk analysis.
• Identify the ideal clinical parameters to be used at various stages of periodontal disease management.

• Identify the patient and the dental team in the joint management if periodontal disease.

Essential Content

Nutrition and periodontal disease, neutrogenomics, inflammation modulation, links between periodontal disease and systemic conditions, e.g. pregnancy, diabetes, BPE, diagnosis and treatment.
