This course provides an introduction to basic counselling concepts. It covers a broad range of counselling theory and skills practice and is validated by AQA.
About the Course
The course covers a wide range of topics aimed at providing an introduction to the basic concepts of counselling. This will be a first step towards training to become a qualified counsellor. The course is verified by AQA and provides an introduction to counselling theory, including three different approaches to counselling as well as some class based counselling skills practice.
Aspects of the course will include: basic principles of counselling, BACP ethical guidelines, listening skills, self-awareness and reflective practice. The three theoretical and philosophical approaches to counselling include: Person Centred Counselling, Psychodynamic Counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Counselling.
n.b. This course does not qualify students to practice as qualified counsellors.

What are the entry requirements?
How is the course assessed?
Ongoing assessment via a reflective learning journal. A one hour, short answer, exam is held at the end of the course.
Are there any resources to obtain?
It is recommended that students do not purchase text books prior to the start of the course. Please bring pen, paper and soft folder on the first evening.

What next?
Ultimately the course can lead to gaining a degree in counselling, however the steps to becoming a counsellor are as follows:
* Counselling skills (level 3) - 1 year
* Diploma in counselling (level 4) - 2 years
* 1 year top up degree in counselling
n.b. At present a degree in counselling is not essential to qualify as a counsellor.
