This qualification is intended for candidates who have acquired CPCAB Certificate in Counselling Skills or its equivalent and want take the next step in training to become a counsellor. The Certificate in Counselling Studies is a preparation for more in-depth training in counselling. The course is part-time and will run for 35 weeks. The underpinning model of the course is the CPCAB seven process model of a competent helper. Prospective trainees should be aware that the course involves experiential learning and self-awareness exercises that encourage participation in the learning experience. Throughout the course trainees will be expected to take responsibility for managing and evidencing their own learning. Trainees will not be trained counsellors on completion of the course.

Internal assessment
Assessment is on-going involving self assessment, peer feedback, tutor assessment, a practice case presentation, and is designed and conducted internally to meet specific requirements outlined by the awarding body. Trainees are required to produce a portfolio of documentary evidence, including a written assignment, and a self review, to achieve the learning outcomes of all seven units.
External assessment – The trainee will complete a Candidate Feedback Paper on a CPCAB video of a "counselling session" under time constrained conditions. This Candidate Feedback Paper will be assessed externally by the awarding body. Trainees are required to be assessed as proficient in both Internal and External assessment elements to achieve the qualification.
