This course will help you to develop create flourishes and illustrative additions to your calligraphy projects. You will learn how to generate decorative elements, incorporate them into your writing and how to use visual references as inspiration for illustrations.

About this course

More advanced students:
• Work on self-directed projects with help and advise from the tutor.

No equipment is needed for the first session. However, you will need to purchase an A3 folder for handouts and worksheets. Advice will be given about tools and materials you can purchase to enable practice between sessions or if you progress to further study.

Course programme

We will begin by examining how flourishes are constructed. Then we will explore how to add them to letterforms and use them as a border around a finished piece of writing. We will then look at ways of generating your own illustrations by adapting photographic reference.

During the class there will be group and individual demonstrations. You will be given examples and worksheets which enable you to develop at your own pace. It will be beneficial if you can do some practice between sessions.
