  • I am quite disappointed with my experience and my courses. I couldn't find a place to register my complains regarding my issues. It was a great bizzare thing to face. This was not something I expected for.

  • From the very first day, the Loughborough University welcomes all its students with open arms starting from the open day to the entire academic year. They have the best of nightlife and social life. I Had the best of night outs here. The lecturers, students ,employees at the shops and clubs are all very friendly. I have made friends for life whilst studying at Loughborough. My course has made me realise that theres nothing impossible and to never give up on dreams.

Course programme

What you'll study

The modules on our Creative Writing MA are designed to deliver a high quality educational experience. Our School of the Arts, English and Drama has an impressive reputation for teaching and research excellence in the fields of visual, literary and performing art.

Modules

Our Creative Writing MA covers a wide range of topics; to give you a taster we have expanded on some of the core modules affiliated with this programme and the specific assessment methods associated with each module.

  • Semester 1
  • Semester 2

Semester 1

Departures (30 credits)

Departures (30 credits)

This module aims to extend your repertoire, deliberately introducing you to a range of alternative literary and non-literary forms. Classes are interactive and regular readings of work – of drafts and “finished” work - are included in the timetable. Individual consultations are also scheduled.

Resources for Advanced Research (15 credits)

Resources for Advanced Research (15 credits)

Much of the most complex forms of research involve the evaluation of evidence and the archives from which it is derived. On this module you will be encouraged to consider how non-traditional forms of evidence (for example, web resources or local historical collections) might be judged for their authenticity and usefulness. By this means, it is usual to explore fresh approaches to research questions. Our sense is that the most valuable creative work often derives from choice of content as well as form.

Perspectives (15 credits)

Perspectives (15 credits)

The approach in this module is to offer a range of investigations into points of view and narrative choices. The texts explored in the initial weeks exemplify “broken” or radically structured works that challenge the reader. You will then be encouraged to adopt such techniques in their own work.

Semester 2

Diversions (30 credits)

Diversions (30 credits)

Drawing closely upon other Creative Writing work, this module looks closely at the distinction between the literary and non-literary and whether the boundary between these categories is valuable or helpful.

Writers and the Writing Industries (30 credits)

Writers and the Writing Industries (30 credits)

One of the tasks for any creative writer is to get their work published. This involves both hard-copy and digital opportunities and also necessary connections with industry professionals. You will be armed with the relevant knowledge that this entails and methodologies about how to advertise in relevant sites and events.

Dissertation (60 credits)

Dissertation (60 credits)

The dissertation allows you to pursue a topic or project of your choice, leading to the submission of a portfolio of original work accompanied by a report on your own process. It is common for candidates to capitalise upon preparatory study in relevant modules in order to pursue projects of a radical and challenging nature.
