Carol Weston is the director of ADD Excellence and is an International Speaker and Training Consultant. Carol brings over 15 years of experience in working with children,young people and families in the voluntary sector,private practice and as ADHD Consultant in both social care and education settings. Carol is particularly interested in reducing the social and educational exclusion experienced by young people with ADHD by reducing the risks associated with this often misunderstood neuro-developmental disorder.

Fin O’Regan is a former secondary science teacher and was the Headmaster of the Centre Academy School regarded as the first specialist school within the UK for children with ADHD/ODD from 1996 -2002. He is currently a Behaviour and Learning Consultant for a number of organisations both nationally and internationally and lectures for Leicester University , the National Association of Special Needs and the Institute of Education . In addition he is the Education Director of ADDISS the National Association of ADHD in the UK .

The Curious of Case ADHD and ASD:
Overlap and differences

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autistic Spectrum Disorder are terms used to describe specific symptoms that are associated with a range of learning, social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. In truth individuals affected often have a number of overlapping issues to manage. Early intervention and proactive management systems are the key elements in helping children working with teachers and teaching assistant’s families overcome their difficulties.

The course will take within the framework:

  • Legal powers and duty of care
  • Supporting the development of good behaviour
  • Raising standards of positive behaviour

Issues to be discussed include:

  • What is ADHD and what is ASD
  • How to establish learning rituals and structure
  • A range of Behaviour Modification Systems and Strategies for management of children including the 1,2,3 Magic Home and School programme
  • How to improve relationships with peers and siblings
  • To consider the impact of Multi agency options for the management of ADHD, ASD and related conditions
  • How best to support supervisors with specific children.

Intended impact on practice:

  • To be able to fully understand and recognize the ADHD and ASD conditions
  • To develop a range of practical interventions for the teaching and learning of students with ADHD and ASD
  • To be able to develop proactive inter-relationships with parents and carers of children with ADHD and ASD to produce greater communication systems between the school and home
  • To develop the confidence and skills in dealing with challenging behaviour within current evidence based practices.

COURSE WILL INCLUDE:
Tutor input, PowerPoint Presentation, Handouts, Video Clips, Practical Activities, Group Discussion and Feedback.

Career opportunities: AS it is now recognised that there are over 5% of the school aged population with ADHD it is of benefit to all practtioners to have a greater understanding of how these conditions ( ADHD /ASD ) can negatively impact on ECM Outcomes without specialist knowledge. Greater understanding and skills will improve practice and performance.
