About this course

The general entry requirements for studying at Advanced level apply, in addition you must have either a grade C in Dance at GCSE, or grade 5 Ballet, or entry can be after an audition. Other dance students should look at the Dance pathway available as an option within Performing Arts, further details in the Performing Arts leaflet.

This course and specification is designed to meet the needs of students who wish to study dance in depth. On this course, you will gain experience of choreography and performance and you will be encouraged to think critically about dance. The course promotes progression in depth and complexity of study through AS and A level examinations.

Where next?

This course provides a suitable foundation for study in Higher Education and for employment. Students have gone on to further their studies of dance study at The Place, Laban Centre, London Studio Centre, Roehampton and Surrey Universities.

What is the course content?

For AS you will study the dancer as a performer, the process and craft of choreography and the significance of dances. You will create a solo choreography and perform in a duet/trio.

For A level you will study a chosen area within ballet and modern dance and a set work in depth. You will create a group dance and perform a solo.

Throughout AS and A level you will take part in workshops with visiting artists and see live performances of current dance repertoire in theatres in Brighton and London. You will receive weekly dance technique classes as part of the enrichment programme. This is a lively and exciting course which aims to develop your knowledge, skills and personal expression through dance.

Unit 1 Written paper: Understanding Dance
40% of total AS mark
20% of total A level mark

Unit 2 Practical Coursework: Choreography and Performance
60% of total AS mark
30% of total A level mark

A Level

Unit 3 Written Paper: Appreciation â€" Context and Content
50% of total A2 mark
25% of total A level mark

Unit 4 Practical Examination: Group Choreography and Solo Performance
50% of total A2 mark
25% of total A level mark
