Year 1 focuses on developing your dance technique and knowledge of dance history. You will also learn about non-Western dance forms, develop your knowledge of anatomy and expand your creative skills.
In Year 2, while continuing to develop your fitness and dance technique, you will learn about theoretical frameworks and methodological tools, and apply them to your practical work. You will also learn about popular dance styles. A variety of option modules enable you to focus on your own areas of interest, such as choreography, intensive technique, cultural dances, dance on screen, teaching and event management.
In Year 3, you will work with a professional choreographer to create and perform a new piece of work, and with a supervisor to develop a research project (this might be practice-led). You will continue with option modules introduced in Year 2, and have opportunities to undertake a work placement or collaborate across disciplines (eg. with a composer or filmmaker).

About this course
Diversity is at the heart of Kingston University's Dance BA(Hons). Our students are from a diverse range of backgrounds and come with a variety of dance experiences. We cater for a wide range of practical backgrounds, so not having a classical or contemporary background is not a problem.
We study a diverse range of styles including street dances (eg hip hop, krump, house, popping, locking), Odissi, pan-African and African diasporic dances, popular dances (eg salsa, lindyhop, ragtime, tap, ballroom, commercial, Jamaican dancehall, burlesque) and Western theatrical dance styles (eg classical ballet, Cunningham).
The course capitalises on London's multicultural dance scene: Kingston is just 30 minutes from central London, home to major international centres such as the South Bank Centre, Sadler's Wells, the Barbican and West End theatres.
The course develops your understanding of theory through dance practice.We use a range of teaching methods such as practical workshops, lectures, independent research and seminars.
Assessment methods include:
performances;
presentations;
essays; and
logs and portfolios.
Our supportive staff help you develop to your full potential.
Optional modules in the second and third year allow you to follow your own interests and career goals.
The course's broad focus means that graduates might choose to go into:
community dance;
dance management;
dance performance; or
further professional training or academic study.
All employers will value the skills developed by this type of study, which include:
creativity and self-expression;
analysis and critical thinking;
communication;
research;
self-discipline; and
organisation.
