Dance GCE A Level

Qualification: AS/A2 - 2 year course

Course type: Level 3 (advanced)

Entry requirements:
4 x GCSE B Grades, grade 5 or better in an accepted dance form or equivalent experience.

Course assessment:
As a member of the Drama Department, you will undergo assessment on a weekly and termly basis through internal testing and homework and College wide assessments.

In the AS year of your Dance course, you will have one written exam on the dancer as performer, the process of choreography and the significance of dance, and one major practical assessment comprising of a solo choreographed dance and a performance as part of a duo or trio.

At A2, you will have another written exam investigating one area of study from ballet, modern dance or jazz dance and a critical analysis and appreciation of one set work from a choice of three. You will again have a practical exam where you will choreograph, but not perform in a short piece for a group.

What will I learn?
The AS Course
At AS Level, you will focus on the development and performance of your own choreography and performing within a duo/trio. You will receive training on technique and the health and safety of the dancer. You will begin to develop critical skills for the analysis of choreography and performance within your own work and in professional repertoire.
The A2 Course
At A2, you will have the opportunity to develop skills and extend and apply knowledge gained at AS level. The focus of choreography is shifted towards group dance. You will develop knowledge and understanding of a specific area of study related to the modern dance, ballet, jazz dance. Performance skills will be developed in relation to one of the specific areas of study.
You will continue to receive instruction on technique and the health and safety of the dancer. You will make an analytical study of one set work and its cultural and artistic context. You will also devise and original choreographed piece for a group.

What Makes a good Dance student?
This is not a course for beginners. You will need to have dance qualifications in ballet, jazz. modern, tap, hip hop, street dance, national dance or other accepted form. Equivalent experience in one or more forms of dance is also acceptable.

Which other courses link well with this subject?
The choice is wide, but Drama and Theatre Studies, Performing Arts, Media or Film Studies, any English course, Modern Languages, Art, Sociology and Psychology all have links to this course.

Future Opportunities
Students may progress onto Higher Education courses that focus on dance, drama and musical theatre or can take a different route and explore the teaching possibilities in this area.
