The Diploma in Dance Instruction is a challenging Level 3 course which provides a foundation for the teaching of dance. The qualification gives prospective dance teachers a solid grounding in the skills and knowledge required to teach dance in a safe environment. It consists of 4 mandatory units, 2 cover teaching skills with focus on teaching observation and safe dance practice, whilst 2 are dance genre specific and focus on technical, performance and musical knowledge required at this level.

What you need to know
How will I study?

Unit 1: Observation and Understanding of Teaching and Learning Techniques. This unit develops your personal observation skills and understanding of teaching and learning techniques providing a basis for progression to dance teaching. Unit 2: Promotion of Health and Safety in Dance. This unit develops your understanding of important and common aspects of safe dance practice and health and safety in dance. Unit 3: Vocational Graded Examination (Intermediate) in relevant dance genre(s). This unit provides learners with the technical, musical and performance skills required for employment in the sector. Unit 4: Dance Practice and the Relationship between Music and Dance in a Chosen Dance Genre(s). The focus of this unit is on the understanding of teaching methods, safe dance practice and the relationship between music and dance together with the level of technique required for Primary to Grade 5 in the relevant dance genre(s).
How will I be taught?

You will be timetabled to be in college 2 full days a week. Delivery will take the form of practical sessions, technique classes, class seminars, theory lessons, guest speakers and individual tutorials. There is an option to undertake the Health and Safety Unit as a Distance Learner. Private study forms an essential element of this course and you will be given clear guidance regarding independent activities you should undertake to ensure successful completion of the qualification.
How will I be assessed?

Assessment techniques are designed to assess each unit of the qualification in an appropriate manner. Unit 1: Tutor-assessed lesson observations Unit 2: Tutor-assessed task completion and 1 hour external exam assessed by an ISTD marker Units 3/4: Practical exams assessed by an ISTD Examiner
