Overview

With public awareness of Data Protection having increased significantly in recent years and with the prospect of a considerable increase in the powers available to the Information Commissioner, this topic can no longer be ignored.

This half-day course provides a crash course on the Data Protection Act 1998 and adopts a practical and common sense approach with the emphasis on commercial as well as legal considerations. Delegates will be given the opportunity to apply their knowledge through a series of practical exercises.

Learning Outcomes:

  • To describe the key terminology associated with the Data Protection Act 1998 and to demonstrate an understanding of the key principles
  • To comprehend the key obligations of data controllers concerning collection, usage and storage of personal data
  • To understand the issues surrounding data security and what needs to be done in the event of a security breach
  • To outline data subjects’ rights, with particular emphasis on subject access and direct marketing issues, and to consider how to deal with these in a compliant and commercially sound way using relevant examples
  • To understand the basic principles of the Employment Code of Practice
  • To describe the enforcement options available to the Information Commissioner
