Working with the Wallace Collection you will have the opportunity to explore the fascinaitng objects held in their collections to help you generate new ideas and ways of working. Through a series of research and design exercises the course will teach you to develop, design and make jewellery sympathetic in ethos, material or technique to the collection. You will learn about designing and making in a museum context, and how to work to a set brief and deadlines; and you'll finish the course with a unique body of work on which you can draw for your ongoing designing and making. Working alongside other jewellers, you will help each other with peer discussions on contemporary making, and by critiquing each other's work. There will be both offsite visits to the museum and studio time in the Jewellery Workshop at City Lit.

About this course
- Confidently design new works based on the Wallace Collection.- Carry out effective primary research, using drawing and model-making.- Critique other jewellers' work and use constructive feedback from others- Design, develop and realise a piece of jewellery from primary sources- Realise at least one piece of jewellery using traditional and/or experimental materials and processes- Take home a body of work upon which you will be able to draw for future independent projects.
City Lit provides basic materials in reasonable quantities, such as base metals (copper, gilding metal etc.) and other materials (paper, enamel etc.) chemicals (pickle, borax etc.) and sundries (etching resist, polishing compound etc). However, all precious metals (silver, gold etc.) stones, and other materials you need for your specific projectsmust be provided by you. Again, you will be given advice on what and where to buy them.You are advised that sensible footwear must be worn in the studio . Through demonstrations, hand-outs, practical activities, group discussions, 1:1 tutor feedback and museum visits. For the first session at the Wallace Collection you are asked to bring a sketchbook, pens and pencils.
About your tutor:
Noon Mitchelhill
Noon Mitchelhill is an established jeweller who has been designing and making for over 20 years. Since graduating with a Masters Degree from the Royal College of Art she has exhibited widely in the UK, Europe, Japan and the USA, and her jewellery has been featured in a range of publications. Noon works predominantly in silver and gold and regularly shows her work through selected galleries and exhibitions. Noon has over 20 years teaching experience.
