Who is this course for?
The course is for mature applicants who have an active interest in counselling skills and who may work in a health and social care setting where they may have the opportunity to practice the skills learnt on the course. It is intended for those who are interested in either developing professionally or studying counselling at a higher level.

What are the entry requirements?
You will need to do an entry assessment and be interviewed. You will need the equivalent of 5 GCSE passes at level c or above. You need to be working or prepared to undertake a voluntary placement in a related setting for the duration of the course.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.

• Minimum Literacy Level: Entry 2

You can read and understand short pieces of writing such as letters, messages, simple stories, timetables and adverts. You can write short pieces of writing - for example an email to a friend, a simple letter, a story or a message.
• Minimum Numeracy Level: Entry 2

You can work with numbers, symbols, and simple diagrams. You can add and subtract simple numbers and use simple fractions. You can use money, tell the time, measure things and know about squares, triangles and rectangles.

BTEC Ed Excel Diploma in Counselling Skills

Where can it lead?
This course can lead to higher education to undertake a counselling diploma or degree. It should enable enhanced practice skills and help career development.

What will I study?
A range of subjects including: counselling skills and theory; human growth and development; understanding stress; ethics and values in relation to counselling and self development.

How will I be taught?
You will study through group work, Pair work, co-counselling as well as studying theory. You will also do reflective writing and self development activities.

How will I be assessed?
Continuous assessment by completing a range of assignments in addition to self, peer and tutor assessment processes.

What support is available while I am on the course?
Learning support is available as required.
