Course programme

This three-day intensive workshop (Mon-Wed) documentary film workshop is aimed at students and staff dealing with pure science and medical science topics. The trainers are both filmmakers and scientists and will show you documentary film styles pertinent to translating your message from the scientific realms onto AV media. This will enable you to distribute information in a visual format and be informed of relevant tools useful to your medium. Films from the trainers’ own work in pure and medical science fields will be shown to assist you in finding the style appropriate to your own research. By the end of the workshop, you will have learned how to:

  • operate a video-camera
  • properly capture sound with a microphone
  • set up and perform a proper interview
  • shoot for editing a film
  • use the basic editing tool with Final Cut Pro
  • output your final film for several platforms

Before coming to the workshop, you will be asked to think of a project that you would like to visualize. It should be related to science and the scientific process. It can be:

  • a specific topic, aimed at other scientists or for use in a presentation
  • a more general topic aimed at the public at large, or in education

You will work in teams, but each of you can work on your own project, using your partner to help with the shooting process.

The workshop is designed to give ample space and time for individual attention.

Screenings of different science-related films are organised at the end of each day, followed by a discussion of the techniques employed.
