This course will give you a general overview of common apps on both smartphones and computers, how they work, the language around them, and provide with you the confidence to learn more about them either on your own or by joining another course. We will look at some of the most popular apps in the UK including WhatsApp, Gmail and other Google apps, Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, Dropbox and Spotify. You will learn where to locate Apps and how to access them and also become familiar with security issues.

About this course

do some or all of the following:
• explain what an app and how it works
• identify the difference between an app on your computer and your smartphone
• be comfortable with common jargon around apps such as download, upload, synching, settings etc.
• identify the most popular apps in the UK e.g. Google apps, Whatsapp, Instagram, Dropbox
• identify the key features of these apps and access them easily
• identify their most common uses and be confident in talking about them
• find apps and download them
• maintain digital security and restrict their usage
• feel much more confident in the world of apps to explore matters further.

You will need to bring your own smartphone. Please also bring a folder, pens and paper. There are no additional costs.

This will be a relaxed and supportive learning environment: step by step learning will help you become more skilled. You will have lots of opportunities to ask questions and address areas you need help in. It will be a practical hands-on course where you are able to experiment under the guidance of the tutor. An interactive whiteboard will help make demonstrations easy to understand.

This latter course is part of our Complete Course for Beginners series. We recommend completing these courses to gain a good foundation in digital skills. Other parts of this programme are: a) Becoming confident on your computer b) Becoming confident on the Internet: setting up, searching, security, safety c) Becoming confident with emails d) Digital Skills Award: A Complete Course for Beginners. This last course is a qualification course. We also run a range of introductory courses in Microsoft Office programs. Your tutor will advise you on the best course to do.
