Digital Post Production
Digital Post Production is one of the youngest and most exciting areas of the film and television industry. Constantly evolving and becoming ever more essential, this course is unique in that it is designed to develop the knowledge and skills that provide a solid, all-round understanding of the digital post production process for feature films, television programmes and commercials.

This course is for people who aspire to be:

  • VFX Artists/Compositors (Flame/ Shake/Nuke/Fusion)

  • Online Editors (AVID|DS/Smoke)

  • Digital Film Colourists (iQ/NuCoda/Scratch)

  • Post Production Supervisors/Producers


  • Students will develop a thorough understanding of the necessary compositing, grading and onlining skills by working extensively with a multitude of systems including Autodesk Flame and Smoke, AVID|DS Nitris HD and cutting edge Digital Intermediate (DI) technology including NuCoda, Quantel iQ and Scratch. Students will graduate with in-depth knowledge of these and other related systems, and the techniques employed by leading industry artists and operators.

    In the fast-moving area of digital post production there are tremendous opportunities for a successful and rewarding career. The NFTS holds a unique position within the film and television industries whereby it can offer an invaluable “bridge to the Industry” that attempts to help graduates establish themselves in a new careers. Graduates of this course are in permanent employment from Soho to São Paulo, at companies such as Framestore CFC, Double Negative, Pepper, Smoke & Mirrors, Picture Production Company and O2 Films. They have been working on feature films like Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, The Bourne Ultimatum and Stardust, 10,000BC, The Dark Knight, Hellboy2 and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, TV programmes such as Life on Mars, Hotel Babylon and Primeval, as well as numerous music promos, titles and commercials.
    CurriculumThis unique modular course has been designed to keep pace with changes in technology and Industry practice.

    You'll learn through experience to develop/design, schedule, budget and manage the digital post production parts of many NFTS productions by acting as a post production supervisor or producer, at the same time as operating the systems to create visual fx, grade, online and master the projects.

    Understanding the processes and technology is vital and you'll graduate with a solid technical understanding of standard definition and high-definition formats, film stocks and formats, digital film theory and audio formats.

    Working closely with Industry partners, you'll also benefit from a wide range of workshops and masterclasses run by Industry professionals. Carefully selected practical work placements may also be available.

  • A DVD/VHS containing samples of your work. Applicants who do not have a background in film or television may submit examples of their work in their own field as a portfolio, on CD, as a weblink or other appropriate form
