Course programme

The Institute of Counselling was founded in 1985 as a Christian based, not for profit independent educational body. It is committed to promoting pastoral care throughout the services it provides.

The Aims of the Institute of Counselling are:

(a) to promote the training and development of counselling skills, (b) to provide opportunities for continuing professional development, (c) to produce and distribute counselling skills training resources and (d) to provide a counselling service for individuals needing counselling.

The Institute provides a wide range of counselling and related courses. Students enrol with assurance and confidence on our quality courses, which are fully backed by the experience and resources of the Institute of Counselling.

In its early years the Institute offered only courses in Clinical and Pastoral Counselling, within a pastoral context. Since 1985, over 18,000 students from the UK and overseas have enrolled on these courses.

In recent years, has also produced a selection of further courses which follow the clinical person-centred approach developed by Carl Rogers and others.

The Institute is committed to providing counselling skills training to all who will benefit from the courses. On this basis a non-discriminatory policy is operated with regard to students' background, culture, ethnic origin, gender, age or creed.

Diploma In Counselling

This popular course is chosen by social workers, teachers, nurses, pastoral workers, and other professional carers who require a post-qualified level award in counselling skills. This course is not quite as demanding as Course 5000N.

Successful students are entitled to use the title Dip.Coun after their name.

Many students choose this course because of the valuable opportunities to enhance the quality of care they can offer to clients.

The effectiveness of this course is enhanced by a wide range of multi-media training materials, with each of the four course modules accompanied by selected training aids in the form of textbooks, audio cassettes, or videos.

We have selected resources which will make your course interesting to study, and effective in training you to understand and apply counselling skills in your own care-giving situation.

Our course manuals are illustrated for clarity and presentation, and the course also includes selected textbooks for further help with specialised subjects such as marriage counselling and bereavement.

The audio CD-ROM demonstrate the practical application of counselling skills, with clear examples of good practice.

The CD-ROMs accompanying your studies are unique because they show real counsellors in authentic sessions with actual clients, filmed exclusively for use by the College and its students.

The CD-ROMs incorporate more than just recordings of counselling sessions - they also include accurate explanations of the counselling models and theories involved.

Through the CD-ROMs you will not only see, hear and experience for yourself the real issues in counselling, you will also be able to identify the person-centred skills, models and theories used in real life counselling situations.

The Diploma course comprises four modules and is expected to take two years to complete, although you may study over three years if required.

The four modules of the Diploma course are:

1. Certificate in Counselling
2. Grief and Bereavement Counselling
3. Couple and Family Counselling
4. Crisis Counselling
