Course Content

  • Literature Review
  • Thesis
  • Thesis Proposal

Course Assessment

The assessment consists of three parts: literature review, thesis proposal and thesis.

About three months into the enrolment period a literature review seminar is held. This seminar should be based on a fresh study of the Computer Science literature, carried out since the student's registration as a PgDIT student. The emphasis throughout should be on critical clarification of a clearly identified set of references. The seminar will also emphasise the clarity of an originally drafted registration proposal and the project management milestones.

All PgDIT students must attend the Research Methodology workshops/module. The methodology used for the research must be the clearly discussed and described in relation to student's project. Any technical knowledge required (e.g. learning a new language) should be completed within three months.

Following the literature review seminar, each student is required to submit a concise thesis proposal by the end of the fourth month. The proposal should describe the research to be undertaken for the remainder of the course, with a specific plan of work in detail.

After the thesis proposal, the only remaining formal assessment is the PgDIT thesis itself. Students should aim to submit a thesis at the end of the 12 months' period. No oral examination is held, unless either supervisor or examiner requests one.
