The course covers the following main subject areas: Theory of General Optics, Theory of Ophthalmic Lenses, Theory and Practice of Ophthalmic Dispensing, Professional Conduct & Communications, The Assessment and Management of Refractive Errors, Low Vision, and Basic Principles of Contact Lens Wear.
Candidates must have GCSEs (with grade C or above) in either Mathematics or Physics, plus either English Language or English Literature, and three other subjects of your own choice, one of which must be science-based.
Qualifications which are considered equivalent, such as those received in schools/colleges overseas, are also accepted. Some of the above qualifications may be waived for prospective students who have worked in the optical industry or profession for 10 years or more. At the commencement of the course, you must register with the Association of British Dispensing Opticians, and the General Optical Council, as a Student Optician.
Assessment is by written and practical exams in each of the above seven modules. Please note that the practical examinations are arranged for directly with the ABDO, with the relevant fees paid to them.
Completion of the course qualifies you to work as a Dispensing Optician. On completion of the year two theory and practical examinations, candidates will be able to register with the General Optical Council, and to use the professional suffix FBDO.
