The diploma in public service interpreting (DPSI) is a nationally recognised award and provides evidence of the ability to interpret between providers and users of the public services such as law or local government.
The programmes focus on the theory and practice of interpreting and at the same time they prepare the student to work in the law sector. Speakers from the appropriate sector play a prominent role in the course and visits are arranged to institutions within your chosen sector.
Student will closely work with the course tutor who is a qualified interpreter. The skills acquired by the students during the course include consecutive and simultaneous, sight translations, written translations, note taking skills In addition students will gain knowledge of ethical and professional practices related to the role of a Public Service Interpreter.

About this course

The qualification is composed of five units for each pathway:

Unit 01 (Level 6): Interpret consecutively and simultaneously (whispered) in the public services
Unit 02 (Level 6): Provide a sight translation into English in the public services
Unit 03 (Level 6): Provide a sight translation from English in the public services
Unit 04 (Level 5): Translate into English in the public services
Unit 05 (Level 5): Translate from English in the public services

This course is aimed at those who want to work as public service interpreters in the Law sector, and prepares students for the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) Law examinations organised by the institute of linguist. The DPSI is the main qualification for interpreters who work in Public services.

Applicants must be fluent in English and one foreign language candidate’s command of the written and spoken languages should be equal to the standard of first year honours language degree. Students must be able to switch between languages easily transferring ideas and concepts between them. All applicants will be invited for a brief interview before any offer of a place can be made on the course.

Additional information

Past students are working in a range of jobs in the public sector such as legal services and NHS. Holders of the DPSI can apply for membership of the National Register of Public Service Interpreters. This register is used by the public services to recruit interpreters at the local and national level.
