Course programme

About the course

The Post-graduate Diploma is a one year programme. It is validated by the University of Hull. It expands on the knowledge and skills gained during prior training such as the Relate Certificate in Clinical Supervision, with a specific focus on supervising within Systemic, Psychodynamic and Psychosexual perspectives.

Aim

The aim of the programme is to provide education and training which leads to achieving advanced competence in supervision for relationship therapy with couples, families or individuals.

Course content

The taught element of the course is organised to offer the choice of two out of three model-specific modules. Each module consists of three 2-day blocks of teaching. Each day of teaching begins at 9:30 am and ends at 5 pm.

The modules are:

  • Supervision of systemic relationship therapy,
  • Supervision of psychodynamic relationship therapy and
  • Supervision of psychosexual relationship therapy.

A year-long placement as practice supervisor runs alongside the modules (usually, but not necessarily, at a Relate Centre). As well as the taught programme, students will be required to attend three events from the Relate programme of Continuing Professional Development days (CPD), or relevant external events. These are paid for separately.

Entry criteria

Candidates who have completed the first year of the Post-graduate programme validated by the University of Hull are eligible to proceed to the second year automatically.

The Post-graduate Diploma is also open to supervisors who have completed other Relate supervision training, such as the Relate Certificate in Clinical Supervision, or equivalent, and have two years of supervision practice.

Summary of entry criteria:

  • A first degree or evidence of academic achievement at level 6 (i.e. "honours" level) e.g. UAD Introduction to Couple Counselling
  • The Relate Certificate in Clinical Supervision or equivalent qualification
  • A counselling/therapy or relevant professional qualification
  • Two years of supervision experience post qualification in a relevant clinical context
  • A current supervisor reference
  • An opportunity to apply clinical supervision to a work setting.

All successful applicants will be required to have undergone a Criminal Records Bureau check at enhanced level within the 12 months leading up to the start of the programme.

Adequate skills in the use internet, email, and word processing are essential

Teaching

The programme uses a variety of methods. These include formal lectures, structured skills development and practice sessions and group work. As this programme is a clinical programme, there is a strong emphasis on practical and experiential work.

An essential element in the philosophy of the Relate Institute's approach to teaching and learning is the importance we place on student feedback and evaluation. We try to incorporate students' ideas whenever appropriate and practicable within the programme structure.

Assessment

Assessment is by written assignments that are designed to evaluate students' theoretical understanding and practice competence.

There is an annual supervisor's report and students will be required to submit a Professional Portfolio.

Students are required to adhere to BACP Ethical Framework.

Interview Criteria

Applicants who do not already have a Relate practitioner qualification will be required to attend for interview and demonstrate personal qualities relevant to therapeutic practice and the training context.

These include:

  • Respect for and valuing others
