Welcome to the “Do it Yourself - Power Window Systems -Schematic Diagnostics” Course! This Second Intermediate Course continues the Instruction started in the Beginner and First Intermediate course.Although the main focus of this course is on Power Window System Diagnosis, the Tips and Techniques learned in this course can be applied to any Automotive Electrical Schematic.Like my other courses, a few schematics are analyzed extensively aiming to provide a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts. There are way too many variations of wiring diagram styles, symbols, and layouts. To cover every Year, Make and Model might take a lifetime. The Good News is…. you do not have to learn every diagram one by one. Learn the groundwork taught here in this course and apply the diagnostic thought process to your own car’s schematics. The way to get good at this is to Practice, Practice, Practice.Of course, if you are going to be doing any work yourself on a car, it is going to require that you take some type of Hands-on course to be sure you have the skills needed and understand the necessary safety precautions. This course focuses on the electrical diagnosis, not mechanical repair.Be careful about jumping right in and testing something on your car, until you are comfortable, and feel you have acquired the skills to do so.With that said…. Let’s get started!

Introduction 2 lectures 04:46 Basic Window Motor Operation preview A simple Window Motor Schematic is compared to a bulb circuit schematic. The motor circuit is drawn two ways showing how reversing polarity will make the motor spin in the opposite direction. Demo - Window Motor - Reversing Polarity A Live Demonstration of a window motor in a simple circuit. The motor spins clockwise at first and then when Power and Ground is reversed, the window motor spins the other direction. Power Window Schematics 5 lectures 13:44 Power Window Schematic - Identifying Components The Window Schematic can have a good number of components and many switches so the windows can operate in two directions as well as from two locations. This video explains the components and their purpose. Multiple Switches to Complicate Things This lesson shows how by design there are parts of the schematic connected to power an other parts connected to ground in the "at rest" position of the switches. This allows for the movement of one switch to the up or down position to create the needed power, load and ground path to operate. Many Scenarios on One Picture This complex window schematic has 14 different power, load, and ground scenarios that can be utilized to make the various windows move up or down. A few of them are highlighted and explained in this lesson. Highlighting Challenge - LR from LR Switch Highlighting Power, Load, and Ground Challenge for Operating the left rear window motor from the left rear window switch. Download the schematic from the additional resources and highlight two pictures. One for the window going down and the other for the window going up. Highlighting Challenge Review Let's Review the Highlighting Challenge and see how you did. Diagnosis and Testing. 5 lectures 29:09 Diagnosis Without Wasting Steps Every time you make a measurement or make a test, you need to get a result that helps you narrow down the possible faults. If you learn nothing new after making a test, then you are just wasting your time. Let me explain further and show you what I mean. Reverse Diagnosis - What Would Cause This? Improve Your Understanding of Power Window Schematics with this Reverse Diagnosis Challenge. This activity can really help solidify your understanding of how the window systems function and what can go wrong. Test With a Meter or Test Light This video explains how to make diagnostic tests at the various components. A circuit tester is covered in detail explaining how you can use the test light (aka circuit tester) as a substitute load as well as testing for power and ground. Using a Jumper Wire to Bypass Part of the Circuit Let's take your understanding and "Kick it up a Notch" with this inexpensive tool and testing method at show where the...
