This course will survey what is currently known about animal communication systems, and compare them to what we know about human language. We will look at:• intra-species communication in the wild• laboratory studies of artificially taught ‘languages’• the different modalities used by different species• How did human language emerge?• Examples will be drawn mainly from primates, cetaceans, and songbirds.

Interactive lecture - all information will be supplied via Powerpoint slides which will be made available for download. However, the lectures also include many videos and sound files, so attendance is essential. Be prepared to contribute to class discussion and group work. Additional optional readings will be suggested
but are not required.
