About this course

To study a full A Level programme students will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade A* to C in appropriate subjects.
It is preferred that you have GCSE English Language/Lit at grade C or above to study drama.

The Programme
This course will provide students with creative opportunities to experience theatre as a performer, designer and audience member; allowing freedom of expression with drama as an art form whilst also acknowledging influential practitioners and the work of professional theatre companies. The focus is on practical performance skills, the art of production, the role of director and the study of play texts throughout the history of theatre and will provide a lifelong appreciation of live theatre.
The Programme Content
The course is divided into four units. You will be expected to complete two units in AS and two at A2. The content of the first year is practical assessment with supporting coursework notes, culminating in a final performance piece. You will also explore a variety of play texts through practical drama workshops in a custom built studio space. You will acquire a wider specialist vocabulary and knowledge of Theatre and Drama as a foundation for the rest of the course. In the second year, you will work on devising your own theatre piece, applying a range of theatrical devices and techniques and perform to a public audience. The final part of the course is a written examination which explores play texts from the perspective of director and draws on your knowledge of the history of theatre.
Progression / Careers
The AS Level and full A Level can lead to further study in Drama, Theatre Studies and Performing Arts at Degree or HND level. This may lead to a career in the performing arts industries. AS/A2 also compliments a range of subjects and is extremely useful in building confidence and improving presentation skills in a wide range of careers.
