Drama and Theatre Studies A Level combines practical performance with theoretical work, based on a study of set plays and their stage historyWe believe the future of research lies in breaking down traditional barriers between academic disciplines so the bigger problems of the 21st century can be considered from human as well as physical perspectives. We have a number of interdisciplinary research themes, which fit closely with international research priorities.

Course programme

AS Level: The AS course is made up of 2 units. Unit 1 is a written paper, carrying 60% of your AS mark, and focuses on your discussion and study of a prescribed play and response to a piece of live theatre that you have seen. Unit 2 is a practical exam with written coursework worth 40% of your AS level, within which you will perform an extract from a published play and produce a set of supporting notes that discuss the play, chosen practitioner, rehearsal and development process. A Level: The A Level course builds on the work of the AS and again is comprised of 2 units. Unit 3 is a written paper and focuses on your study of a further two, set plays. This is worth 60% of your A Level grade. Unit 4 is a practical exam, this time focusing on the creation of a devised drama. As with Unit 2, there is a coursework element to the unit, drawing on your research into a chosen style, preparatory and development work. Will I have the chance to see much live theatre? Yes! As part of the AS written paper, students will be required to write about a recent piece of live theatre they have seen. We will organise a wide range of theatre trips to a variety of venues across the year. We ask that students have an open mind and attitude and learn to appreciate theatre and performance in a range of forms, styles and genres. We also invite professional theatre practitioners to come into college and provide both practical and theoretical workshops in order to enhance the learning experience.
