Must have held the vocational licence for the vehicle class they intend to instruct on for a minimum of three years.

Course Delivery Method:
Classroom content consists of 5 modules designed to give essential background knowledge & also specific time set aside for preparation for the Part 1 written exam & Hazard Perception Test. Practical instruction is given for the Part 2 Driving Ability Exam & the Part 3 Instructional Ability Exam.

Main Areas Covered by Course:

  • Principles of road safety & their application.
  • Techniques of driving a large goods vehicle correctly, courteously & safely including control of the vehicle, road procedure, recognising hazards & taking proper action, dealing properly with pedestrians & other road users, use of safety equipment & eco safe driving.
  • The theory & practice of learning, teaching & assessment.
  • Tuition required to instruct a pupil in driving a large goods vehicle including the items set out above, correction of pupils' errors, the manner of the instructor, the relationship between instructor & pupil.
  • The Highway Code, which you can get from most bookshops.
  • Interpretation of the reasons for failure given in the DSA form DLV25A/B/C the 'Driving Test Report' & 'Your Driving Test Report Explained'.
  • Knowledge, adequate for the needs of driving instruction, of the mechanism & design of the LGV.

Final Assessment:
Formative & summative assessment Examination by DSA examiners.

Course Duration:
3 weeks or determined by assessment

Refresher Requirements:
Every 4 years.
