Overview

‘Traditional' Risk Assessment programmes exist to identify predictable risks arising from work activities to help ensure that suitable risk control measures are in place. But what about those situations where risk isn't so easily predictable, or where staff are forced, by the nature of their activities, to undertake a risk assessment ‘at the time', or away from base ‘in the field'? Engineers, police officers, firemen, and many field-based or lone-workers in any number of industries, are often faced with the problem of having to assess risk ‘on the fly' - and often without the support of others. This process - known as ‘dynamic' risk assessment - is one of the key concerns of many organisations and companies. It isn't always possible to
ensure risk assessment in advance of facing a problem. So, if we have to rely on staff to be to make risk judgements ‘on the fly' and for these staff to be able to identify and implement suitable risk controls, we'd better be sure they are suitably competent to do so. Also, we'd better be sure that their managers understand how to deal with the issues that arise.

The 1-day version of this course teaches attendees how to perform these ‘dynamic' risk assessments, whilst the 2-day version also covers how to generate a dynamic risk assessment and the system the assessments are fed in to.

Both courses are certificated by IOSH, the lead professional body for safety in Europe.

Aims

• To provide delegates with a practical understanding of the dynamic risk process
• To enable the delegates to devise dynamic risk reporting and recording systems
• To ensure that delegates understand control strategies for dynamic risk

Learning objectives

After the courses delegates will be able to:

• Identify hazards and assess dynamic risks when exposed to them
• Record dynamic risk information when appropriate
• Implement dynamic risk control strategies and recommend long-term risk controls when appropriate
• Develop a feedback system to ensure that the organisation continues to review and learn from experience when dealing with dynamic risk situations (2-day course)
• Define dynamic risk management requirements, responsibilities and accountabilities (2-day course)
• Implement measures to support and ‘quality assure' dynamic risk management processes (2-day course)
• Develop/contribute to an auditable approach to effective dynamic risk assessment & management

Prerequisites

None, however delegates would benefit from exploring any existing processes, procedures, tools and techniques currently used for risk assessment within their own organisation prior to attendance.

The courses are designed for all those workers and managers who are forced to deal with ‘dynamic' risk assessment and risk control judgements - engineers, project staff working away from site, maintenance technicians, auditors, police officers, fire officers, visiting healthcare professionals, social workers and other ‘mobile workers', etc. The course is also suitable for safety and other professionals who wish to widen their understanding of undertaking and managing the ‘dynamic' risk process.
