Economics AS and A2

Subject category:
Business, Economics and Law

What will I study?
You will study key theoretical concepts, such as supply and demand, competition and monopoly, and government policy.

Duration:
One year for AS Level and a further year to complete A Level.

Do I need any additional qualifications/ skills?
The main thing is to have some interest in the world around you - in politics, current affairs, the environment or even sport. Economics can be applied to most situations in life!

How will I be assessed?
At AS Level, assessment is by examination, including case studies and multiple choice questions. At A2, assessment will be by examination, one exam on microeconomics and one exam on macroeconomics. You will need to be able to explain how economic theory helps us to understand what is happening in the economy, and to identify where economic theory may be lacking.

What can I do afterwards?
Economics is an area that can prepare you for a variety of university courses and careers. Most people would think of links with business and accounting for example, but there are also links with other subject areas, such as geography, environmental science, philosophy, politics, history and sociology. Economics can provide an insight into decision-making in a variety of occupations, including law, town planning, business management and marketing, as well as conservation and environmental management. It is relevant in a number of different fields, and as a result it could open new doors for you as you search for your ideal career.

Are there any additional costs involved?
Students will be required to purchase course texts (around £20) each year, but any additional costs will be kept to a minimum. However, we also hope to arrange at least one excursion during each year, which might involve some optional additional costs.
