About the subject

The syllabus attempts to introduce students to the key concepts and theories of modern economics. The first module concentrates on the economic meaning of the word market. It looks at what the concepts supply and demand mean and how prices are theoretically determined. The second module follows up and develops this simple idea by considering how and why markets fail. Essentially the focus here is on study of "externalities" or spill-over effects associated with market transactions. The last module of the A/S course introduces the idea of Government and its role in the economy, focusing on monetary and fiscal policy.
The A2 content is similarly set out in that students again follow three distinct modules. The first module is concerned with the detail of business organization. Topics covered include market structure and the ability or not of firms to manipulate their prices in the pursuit of maximum profit. The next module sets out to explore the complex workings of the labour market. Finally, there is a synoptic paper which aims to bring together all the main ideas covered in the previous modules.
