What can this course offer me?
The fundamental economic issue is how society decides to allocate its resources; how to assess the efficient use of these resources using cost - benefit analysis and to analyse and evaluate a specific course of action and compare this will alternative outcomes.
The subject matter is divided between micro-economics, (the study of the individual consumer or producer) and macroeconomics (which looks at the economy as a whole regarding its objectives like controlling inflation, or unemployment or achieving sustained economic growth). We study the labour market and how businesses make decisions and react to external problems, as well as how the UK trades with the EU and the rest of the world and the impact of global issues upon us as individuals and as a nation. We currently follow the AQA Economics AS & A2 syllabus.
Since 2002 there has been a 100% pass rate at A2 with up to 60% of students gaining a grade A or B at A2. At KGV you will be taught by highly qualified & experienced graduates.

What will I learn?
Economics will introduce you to the technical methods needed to analyse and understand the economy and its major players: (consumers, producers, governments and international agencies),and how they interact and react to change. Through building up and using models of how the economy and its constituent parts operate you will be able to extract the essential elements from a complex picture and make sense of it. This will provide you with a skill in investigating any real world issue and knowing how to examine and assess it from more than one angle. The teaching staff will use a range of teaching methods & learning styles to ensure you master the theory and content. Some tasks will require you to work independently whilst at times you will be expected to work in small groups and present your findings either to the whole class or in written form.

In the past we have taken students to specialist 6th form conferences and run field trips so that they can meet the chief examiners and receive presentations from top

What Makes a good Economics student?
The course assumes that no student has studied Economics before and assumes no previous specialist knowledge. You need to be literate, numerate and interested in current affairs.

Which other courses link well with this subject?
Economics acts as a natural link to all other subjects. It combines well with Accounting and Business Studies, Humanities, Languages and Social Science and it offers the study of real world issues to complement Mathematics and Science subjects.

Future Opportunities
The study of this new subject will enable you to develop many high order and transferable skills that will be of use in almost all professions. Many students go on to university to study Economics or a related subject, whilst a small number elect to go straight into employment after A levels. Economics gives you training in decision making principles as it develops your analytical skills and enables you to think in a careful and logical manner. As we live in an ever changing world you will be equipped to examine any complex issue and break it down into its constituent parts in order to investigate it and offer alternative solutions to the problem.

Is there anything else I need to know?
Every decision you make in your life will have an economic aspect to it, as most of us have a limited income to spend on goods and services so choices have to be made and we have to work in a competitive environment requiring one to keep developing new skills and taking new opportunites. We are tax payers and recipients of Government services and benefits and laws.
