The Programme
The primary aim of the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is to educate learners to make informed decisions which will aid their progression to appropriate Higher Education in Art and Design.
The Foundation Diploma is the established route to Art and Design Degree courses. It provides a link between the skills acquired during ?A' level or National Diploma and the demands of specialist programmes in Higher Education.
It is an intensive course which helps students to discover their creative potential by experiencing a range of Art and Design disciplines and problem solving experiences, helping them to identify strengths and to choose the best direction for the future.
Specialist pathways include, Visual Communication (Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography) 3D Design (Furniture, Crafts, Interior Design, Product Design, Jewellery) Fashion & Textiles (Millinery, surface pattern, styling, accessories) and Fine Art (Painting, Sculpture, Installations, Time based).
The Programme Content
The Exploratory Stage (Autumn term). Covering skills in observing and responding to visual information, strategies for visual and contextual research, developing ideas whilst exploring the potential of materials and methods and developing individual but informed opinions of contextual studies.
The Pathway Stage (Spring Term). You will choose a main specialist area to work in and develop more specialist skills by exploring ideas and outcomes and using a range of media and materials.
Confirmatory Stage (Summer Term). You will write and carry out a personal project, which allows you to demonstrate the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course, followed by displaying your work in our annual public exhibition.

Entry Requirements
Mode of Study
Full time one year.
Based at North Devon School of Art, Pottington, Barnstaple, EX31 1HN.
Timetabled Days
Currently the Foundation Diploma course runs for four full days, Mondays to Thursdays. Friday is a non-taught day but many students come in to use the studio, which is available. The days begin with registration at 9.30am break for lunch from 12.30 until 1.20 registration and finish at 3.45pm. (These times are to allow for link buses to transport students to and from the main College campus at the beginning and end of each day).
Costs
Approximately #30 studio fees per term towards the cost of basic Art and Design consumable materials and some small pieces of equipment. Students pay for photocopies and colour printing and buy their own standard equipment such as brushes, knives, scissors, rulers, etc.
Progression Careers
The course enables students to make an informed application to a specialist Art and Design Degree course.
The vast majority of students progress onto a relevant Higher Education course, some choose not to apply and to begin their careers.
