Course programme

MA in Education
Mode: full-time

This course brings together many different types of people, all of whom have a common passion for education. If you have a keen interest in your own learning and the learning of others, a curiosity about the teaching process itself and a determination to understand and improve your own working context, then this course will excite and challenge in equal measure.

All of our MA students are work-based, with most working as teachers. They are involved in educating all aspects of society, from young children to adults, slow learners to those excelling in higher education. These teachers are based in a variety of different institutions, in many different countries, with differing expectations. Others on this course are involved in education in a broader sense, working in such diverse areas as social work or prison education.

The work-based aspect of this course provides a unique chance for you to understand and improve education in your own work setting. This is reflected in the way the course is assessed, with every piece of work centred around your own area of interest.

What You Will Study
You will study a wide range of modules. These are divided into Issues modules (which cover particular areas such as Learning and Teaching) and Impact modules (which report on the design and evaluation of changes in the workplace).

The modules are designed to allow you to better articulate your personal learning needs and gains, as well as helping you to apply key research issues from reading and reflection to your own situation. You will cover questioning assumptions and exploring the implications of alternatives, along with sharing your results to further influence professional practice.

Assessment & Learning Methods
We aim to make assessment an integral part of your learning. Each assignment outline is developed to reflect your working reality and the precise format is negotiated with a tutor.

Your Future
This course can help to enhance your existing career or lead you into many different and diverse areas. Our students have enjoyed promotions within their settings, moved to other settings outside mainstream education, applied for threshold and advanced skills teachers status and even moved into higher education lecturing. Others have taken part in funded research projects, written materials for publication and studied for their doctorate.
