Course programme
Course detail Description
Education research in Medicine and the Life Sciences is interdisciplinary and includes both positivist and interpretive methodological approaches. Within the Centre of Education of methology is determined by the nature of the research question. We also support interdisciplinary research, and this has included collaborations with medical humanities, social linguistics, sociology and the performing arts.
Our doctoral students form an integral part of a supportive and growing research community. Typically, they publish papers during their doctoral studies, often co-authoring with their supervisors’ and present their work at national and international conferences. Students can apply for travel bursaries that are capped at £500. These support visits to laboratories or universities for short visits to benefit from leading expertise related to the student’s doctoral research, attend conferences and present their papers. The Centre for Doctoral Studies offer training and careers advice. This complements faculty supervision and mentoring. Students also have the opportunity to teach and this is remunerated.
For further information about research within the school, please refer to the Centre for Education website.
Course study environment
Students are supervised by two members of academic staff and benefit from the supportive research culture of the Faculty. A local induction is provided in addition to College induction. Each student has a dedicated Thesis Progression Committee that monitors students' progress and gives advice and support. Students have access to unrivalled educational resources including the Chantler Clinical Skills Centre, the Gordon Museum of Pathology , the Museum of Life Sciences and libraries of the social and natural sciences.
Additionally, The Centre for Doctoral Studies provides a range of courses to develop theoretical understanding and research skills.
KCL offers a large number of training and skills development opportunities. Participation in the annual Postgraduate Research Symposium is compulsory for all students and provides an opportunity to improve communication and presentation skills to specialist and public audiences. Opportunities are available for postgraduate students to present their work at faculty, national and international scientific meetings. Our postgraduate students also have the opportunity to assist with teaching of undergraduates as demonstrators in practical classes or by leading tutorials. Those with appropriate ex[evidence have opportunities to teach on our’ Masters in Clinical Education’, whose students are drawn from across the health professions.
