To provide students with knowledge of key educational ideas and theories, as well as more focused study of subjects such as early years education, disability and special needs education, and the child and the curriculum. To provide students a good grounding in the traditional core of English literature, from Chaucer to the present, as well as less traditional areas of study such as creative writing, language and linguistics, children's fiction, women and culture, and American, Irish and African literatures. Suitable for: This course is a popular and prudent choice for students who intend to pursue a PGCE following their BA degree, without having to commit to either primary or secondary level teaching. However, it is also an increasingly attractive academic discipline on its own, offering students the opportunity to put their education in context.

About this course
180-220 points, based upon a minimum of two A levels or equivalent.
We welcome applications from students with ethnically diverse backgrounds, students returning to education and international students. We also support widening participation and encourage applicants with non-standard qualifications.
If English is a second language, an IELTS score of 6.0 or greater, or a TOEFL score of 650 or greater, or an approved equivalent must be supplied.

Your first year of studies is a gentle introduction to the theories of education and literature, as well as the role of language in society and historical notions of childhood and the child.
In the second and third years, all students study Shakespeare, creative writing, children’s fiction, the development of the curriculum and twenty-first century childhoods, but otherwise select options within Education Studies and English that interest you most. In your final year, you will also write a dissertation on a topic of your choice.

Career Opportunities
Recent graduates have begun careers in teaching at all levels, librarianship, youth work and local government. Many of our students progress to a postgraduate certificate in either primary or secondary education, both of which are offered at Bedford.
Others opt to pursue postgraduate study, such as our MA in Children’s Literature and Culture.
Teaching/learning methods and strategies
Teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops and individual tutorials. All students use the University’s Virtual Learning Environment to supplement and enhance their learning experience.
Assessment
Assessment on the course is through essays, group research, presentations, seminar papers and exams.
