The MA Education TESOL pathway is for you if you're interested in developing your knowledge and understanding of:

This pathway is for you if you fit any of the following:

You're interested in how languages are learnt and how languages are taught
You're a practitioner working in a variety of settings: primary, secondary, Higher Education, Further Education, Adult or Community Learning, and you want to review or update your practice
You wish to gain knowledge in this specialist area and have little or no experience in the field.

About this course

Students who have successfully completed this pathway have gone on to support EAL pupils in primary school, teach Modern Foreign Languages and teach English abroad.

You’ll usually need an undergraduate degree or an equivalent qualification and a role within education that will allow you to complete the work based assignments. Even if you don’t have these entry requirements it’s worth contacting us if you have relevant professional experience as we may be able to consider your application.

In addition, we recognize the following qualifications: Full DELTA (Cambridge Diploma in TESOL) Modules 1,2 and 3 are normally eligible for 60 credits at Level 7 against our MA Education.

What you will study

  • The Principles of English Language Teaching‌

This module will develop your understanding of the practice of English language teaching. You will explore popular methodology and students are invited to critique the methods, procedures and techniques used in the language classroom.

  • Language Learning Theory and Practice‌

The module will help you to develop an appreciation of how the diverse linguistic backgrounds of learners influence language learning. The role of both the learner and teacher in the language acquisition process will also be considered.

MA Education Programme Specification‌

Part-time students

As a part-time student your studying will normally take place over three academic years, potentially choosing one module per term.

Your first module will be ‘Crafting Your Masters Study’. The other pathway, core and optional modules will be available according to the schedule of delivery.

Here is an example of possible combination modules:

Year 1 - Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits)

Full-time students

As a full time student your studying will normally take place over one academic year. The optional modules and pathway modules will be available according to the schedule of delivery.

  • Crafting Your Masters Study (20 credits)
  • Evidence Based Practice (20 credits)
  • Optional or pathway module (20 credits)

Term 2 (Jan-March)

  • Applying Educational Thinkers and Theorists (20 credits)
  • Independent Study (60 credits) Attend workshop
  • Optional or pathway module (20 credits)

Term 3 (April-June)

  • Comparative Education (20 credits)
  • Independent Study (Submit in August)
  • Optional or pathway module (20 credits) if not already taken in term 1 or 2
