Course programme
This 2 hour listening and speaking skills class is for learners who are 16 and over who want to develop their communication skills to an advanced level. It provides additional learning opportunities for those enrolled on other EFL courses.
What qualifications or experience do I need ?Our skills courses are available for intermediate (B1 CEFR.) to advanced level learners (C1/C2CEFR.) We will test you to make sure you a placed in the right class.
What will I study ?Varied speaking/listening experience for all learners. Interpersonal skills in Spoken English, particularly in work and study context e.g. presentations and seminars. Aspects of pronunciation. Developing fluency and accuracy. Appropriacy and register. Communication techniques - hesitation/fillers. Use of body language and eye contact to enhance communication. Listening extensively for gist and intensively for specific detail. Recognising sign-post words and relationship of speakers. Recognising and practising patterns of intonation. Varieties of spoken English - formality, accent etc. Developing note-taking skills. Identifying reformulation and retelling using parallel expressions and paraphrasing. Exam practice for learners taking Cambridge FCE, CAE and IELTS.
How will I be assessed ?All students will be given homework to do every week e.g. research and preparation for presentations and communication activities
What qualifications could I achieve ?All students will receive a Barnet and Southgate College Certificate of attendance at level A1/B1 CEFR. You can take a Cambridge English exam at level A1/B1 CEFR in December, March or June.

Will I need an interview ?You can be assessed at Southgate Campus Mon - Fri. 10.00 - 12.00 The test usually takes 1 hour. If you not able to come for an assessment we can send you the assessment test to complete and return.
Any extra costs for equipment/materials ?You are expected to bring a file and notebook to all your classes.
