Course programme

Who is this course for?

This 2 hour reading and writing skills class is for learners who are 16 and over and want to develop their reading and writing to an advanced level. It provides additional learning opportunities for those enrolled on other EFL courses.

What qualifications or experience do I need ?

Our skills courses are available for intermediate (B1 CEFR.) to advanced level learners (C1/C2CEFR.) We will test you to make sure you a placed in the right class.

What will I study ?

Skimming texts for gist and scanning for specific information Intensive reading Text structure and cohesion Recognising register and target audience Practising new items of vocabulary and guess meaning from context Summarising and taking notes Describing places and experiences, landscapes and pictures Extending information using who/that/which/where Brainstorming ideas in essay planning Organising arguments into a logical order A variety of language to support main ideas and arguments Using the passive/impersonal voice in reports Selecting appropriate source materials Linking devices to focus on staging and sequence etc.

How will I be assessed ?

All students will be given a piece of writing homework every week

There is no qualification attached to this course

Will I need an interview ?

You can be assessed at Southgate Campus Mon - Fri. 10.00 - 12.00 The test usually takes 1 hour. If you not able to come for an assessment we can send you the assessment test to complete and return.

Any extra costs for equipment/materials ?

You are expected to bring a file and notebook to all your classes.

We offer continuous enrolment which means that you can start your course at any time throughout the year. Max class size: 20
