Electroplating is a technique, used mostly in the industrial field, which allows to cover a non-precious metal with a thin layer of a more precious or more noble or passivable metal by exploiting the electrolytic deposition. This process is usually used to protect metal structures from corrosion, but it can also have decorative purposes. For example, through electroplating it is possible to cover copper with silver or steel with zinc, tin, nickel or chromium. The first equipment for carrying out electroplating was developed by Johann Wilhelm Ritter in 1800, using the electric current produced by a voltaic pile. During his experiments on electroplating, Ritter discovered that the amount of metal deposited depends on the distance at which the electrodes are placed. In 1840 the Swiss physicist August de La Rive developed a method for the electrodeposition of silver and brass, for which he was awarded by the French Academy of Sciences.
