This is an exciting pathway chosen by many who wish to go into the world of work in a practical vocation. Every engineering workshop has a welding department and jobs opportunities are varied in many areas from structural engineering to formula one.
Many who have studied this course go onto work as a sheet worker, plate worker, welder, coded welder, or fabricator. The Fabrication and Welding course covers essential skills for this as well as learning to work safely; communicate in an engineering environment and also work in a team.
The elements that make up the provision are a: NVQ 1 Performing Engineering Operations and a Lv. 1 Welding course in MIG, TIG & MMA.
Anyone who is taken on with less than a GCSE grade C in English Language, or maths will also be asked to improve this through further GCSE study, or equivalent Functional Skills.

Course programme

You'll cover: setting up and using welding equipment, producing welded beads and welded joints; Identifying safe practices and procedures, determining factors that affect weld quality and distortion. You with also learn the safe and effective operation of welding equipment. The skills developed can lead to employment in the following areas of engineering, as a fully skilled trade person. A mixture of practical test pieces and written exams these will be combined to give your overall grade, Pass, Merit or Distinction. This qualification is for anyone working interested in fabrication and welding. There are options to suit a wide range of specialities and skill levels. You don't need any prior qualifications to take this NVQ. Quite simply, your options are just about unlimited and the only barrier to how far you can progress is how hard you're prepared to work. Please note that the provision is moving to the Printworks September 15/16.
